Muhabura Hotel is an old colonial hotel with plenty of character having been build between 1954 and 1956. Muhabura Hotel has plenty of character and is pretty quirky with plenty of history. It is one of the first stone buildings to be set up in Musanze town. The hotel was built with big stone boulders of volcanic rock giving it a unique look and feel.

Muhabura Hotel was originally named Hotel Mimosa and is built on fairly large grounds of about 2.5 acres along the main road between Ruhengeri/Musanze and Gisenyi. The hotel was renamed Hotel Muhabura in 1968, which in the local Kinyarwanda language means, " the reference point, the guide, the example, the pioneer" which is true in every respect as the hotel was the pioneer accommodation establishment in Musanze.

Muhabura hotel was refurbished and extended in 2009 . An additional 16 new rooms and apartments were constructed with great views of the volcanoes in the background. Muhabura Hotel now has a total of 30 rooms and apartments at very affordable rates in a very secure and relaxed environment that is ideal for chilling out after an ardous but thrilling gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.

The Dian Fossey Room: Room 12 at Muhabura Hotel is referred to as The Dian Fossey Room as that is where Dian Fossey stayed when she came from her gorilla camp. She took a bath in room 12 and afterwards came down to the restaurant for a meal. Dian Fossey loved the tranquility of the hotel and the garden infront of her room. In honour of her visit and stay at Muhabura Hotel, room 12 was preserved as she left it. The room rate for spending a night in room 12 is US$110 per night.
