A 9 day safari starting in Entebbe in Uganda ending in Kigali in Rwanda. [One Bwindi gorilla permit is included in the cost but the other gorilla trackings require a supplement to be paid at time of booking] This trip traces the western Rift Valley in the heart of Africa, starts with Kibale Forest with its thirteen species of primates including the chimpanzee. Tracking the noisy chimpanzee families racing through this verdant forest is a thrilling experience. Together with Bigodi Wetland nearby, many forest and swamp birds can be seen. Then takes you for game viewing on the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park - elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, and leopard. In Ishasha, go on the hunt for the tree-climbing lions lounging on old fig trees. See the rich wildlife and array of birds on the Kazinga Channel. Seeing some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a fantastic experience and this safari takes you to two gorilla parks – Bwindi in Uganda and PNV in Rwanda. It offers an opportunity to track gorillas two times, once in Bwindi, and once in PNV in Rwanda on payment of extra
Day 1: On arrival at Entebbe airport, you will be met by your guide. After a briefing you will start your journey to Fort Portal via the town of Mubende set in rolling hills. Lunch en route and continue to Kibale. Arrive late afternoon. Either relax at lodge or explore nearby crater lake. O/N: Ndali/Mantana Kibale (FB).
Day 2: This morning you will go chimp trekking in Kibale forest together with other primates crashing around through the high canopy of the forest with colourful birds squawking nearby. In the afternoon, either visit a school, or crater lakes or visit Bigodi swamp to see swamp birds and some of the community projects financed by tourism. O/N: Ndali/Mantana Kibale (FB).
Day 3: Either a day’s walk in the foothills of the Rwenzoris; one of the great mountain ranges of the world, looking out for its forbidding peaks in the distance, or drive straight to QE. The game seen will depend on the season; the Kasenyi plains are good for lion and the Mweya peninsula for a variety of animals. O/N: Mweya/Jacana (FB).
Day 4: During morning game drive, you may see crater lakes filled with huge flocks of flamingos, lions relaxing on grassy plains, and elephants ambling through the bush. The area ranks extremely high in biodiversity. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel to see some of the famous birdlife. O/N: Mweya Lodge or Jacana Safari Lodge (FB)
Day 5: After breakfast drive through the highlands of Uganda to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or drive via Ishasha home of the trip climbing lions. Roads permitting see tree climbing lions. The views are spectacular on this trip - at one point you can see the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and the Congo. Bird life and primate life in Bwindi is superb, and there is an incredible variety of flora. O/N: Gorilla Resort (FB).
Day 6: Set out early for one of the world's greatest wildlife viewing experiences. At 8.00am, report to the ranger station, where the guides will take you through the dense bush to track gorillas. This trek can take from two to eight hours and requires a reasonable degree of fitness. Long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and a sturdy pair of walking boots are advised. Once you locate the gorillas, you will have time to listen to them communicating and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male and the gentle giant silverback. This trek is considered one of the most unique in the world and it is the only opportunity to see mountain gorillas in the wild. O/N: Gorillas Resort (FB).
Day 7: Today you will transfer to Rwanda by road. (Clocks in Rwanda go back one hour.) Either relax at the hotel or go for strolls around the villages that line the lakes. Spend the remainder of the day visiting local communities around the lodge or simply relax and enjoy the magnificent sunset. O/N: Gorillas Nest Hotel/ Kinigi Guest House (B,L,D).
Day 8: Either go gorilla trekking in Rwanda's magnificent Volcanoes National Park (permit available with additional supplement) or visit the golden monkeys or drive to Gisenyi, visit Ross Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu or climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes, or trek to Dian Fossey's grave, or visit the local school, community projects or walk to Lake Bulera. The park straddles Rwanda's border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rwandan portion is home to gorillas, golden monkeys, silver monkeys, and over 180 species of birds. Currently, approximately 150 mountain gorillas live in the Rwandan portion of the mountains, in approximately 7 groups of varied sizes. These magnificent animals were studied intensely by Dian Fossey during her many years of living in the area. O/N: Gorillas Nest Hotel/ Kinigi Guest House (B,L,D).
Day 9: Depart for Kigali; if time permits, take a tour of the city, including a visit to the market, a pottery project, a widow's project, handicraft shops, and a genocide memorial. Transfer to the airport for your onward international flight. (B,L).
